The course architect, Dr Alister MacKenzie, created a layout of rare subtlety and sophistication. Alwoodley is a natural heathland course, with springy fairways cutting through a profusion of heather, whins and shrubs. It features eye-catching and naturalistic-looking bunkers, strategic choices and large, often undulating greens. The course runs almost straight out and back, the inward nine being tougher as most holes are played into the prevailing wind.

The original Red Course was laid out in 1908 by five-time Open Champion, JH Taylor. An authentic, challenging championship golf course in Oxford offering a traditional heathland experience with pushed up greens and fairways that demand accurate driving to score. Formerly known as Southern Gailes, it is a superb new course that sits in prime links land adjacent to Western Gailes. St Annes Old Links is a challenging layout and it has been used for numerous championships, including Open Qualifying. This pure links course is a certainly a challenge and the best holes are to be found on the southern edge, nearest the clubhouse. The 9th is the most famous hole at St Annes Old Links with its long green, which is hardly visible from the tee. According to reports, Bobby Jones took detailed measurements of this hole, called “Cannon”, when playing here during the 1926 Open.

A great layout calling for much thought to be given to shot placement. The short holes in particular are superb. The greens are excellent and amongst the best in Surrey. Formed in 1908 by J F Abercromby, Worplesdon Golf Course is a fine test for every golfer set in pretty surroundings. Measuring at 6,466 yards off the back competition tee's, this classic heathland course set in the heart of Surrey is one every golfer should have on their bucket list.

Isle of Purbeck Golf Club is set in a heathland nature reserve, decorated with a profusion of gorse, heather, rare flora and fauna. The first thing that strikes visitors is the spectacular views, looking out over Brownsea Island, Bournemouth and the Solent. Indeed, the fifth tee possesses one of the finest views in British golf. The late King Edward declared the view from this point as one of the finest in his kingdom and that opinion is not likely to be disputed by anyone who has had the chance to stand there. Each hole is located in its own unique setting, providing magnificent views and challenges. The 4 par 3's are unique in that they each face a different compass point. Consequently, each poses a different challenge based on wind direction. If you want to post a good score, be prepared for a game of strategy, brains over brawn!
